About This Project
The Water Knowledge Baseline gathers what is already known about mine water management into one trusted, evolving reference, so effort is not duplicated and the real research gaps are visible.
Why it exists
Effective water management needs knowledge that is trusted, relevant and kept up to date.
Status & next steps
The first phase established the baseline, with a public report in February 2026. Phase 3 runs to December 2026.
Who is involved
The University of Queensland’s Sustainable Minerals Institute, in Australia and Chile, led by Professor Claire Côte with Professor Neil McIntyre.
What Phase 3 Adds
Broader coverage of mine water management in Latin America; snow and glacier hydrology; operational water risks such as floods, debris flows and glacial lake outbursts; and water supply. Case studies and references are updated, including Spanish and Portuguese sources, and a discovery study looks at how AI could help keep the baseline current without compromising its quality.
Who It Is For
Water practitioners, researchers and regulators who want the current state of knowledge in one place, and CEEC partners and sponsors, who are invited to contribute references, guidance and case studies as the baseline grows.
